Recently we have been engaged by an International Not For Profit to support them in customising their core child safety documents for their unique environment. This is a really exciting project to be part of.

We are aware that organisations need more customised documents rather than a one size fits all. Here are some thoughts to why this is important.

When it comes to creating child safety policies and other documents, it may seem easier to adopt a one-size-fits-all approach. However, creating bespoke child safety policies is a better idea as it takes into account the specific needs and circumstances of your organisation or community. In this blog post, we will explore why bespoke child safety policies are essential, and how they can benefit children, organisations, and communities.

  1. Tailored to the needs of the organisation

Bespoke child safety policies are tailored to the needs of the organisation. This means that they take into account the unique circumstances of the organisation, such as its size, structure, and activities. A one-size-fits-all approach may not be sufficient to address the specific risks and challenges faced by the organisation. For example, a child safety policy for a large sports club would need to address issues such as transportation, locker rooms, and communication between coaches and parents, whereas a policy for a small community group may focus more on background checks for volunteers and guidelines for interactions between adults and children.

  1. Addresses specific risks and challenges

Bespoke child safety policies are designed to address specific risks and challenges faced by the organisation. This ensures that the policies are relevant and effective in reducing the risk of harm to children. For example, an organisation that works with children who have experienced trauma may need to implement specific measures to ensure that children feel safe and supported.

  1. Builds trust and confidence

Bespoke child safety policies demonstrate an organisation’s commitment to protecting children and building trust and confidence among parents and the wider community. A one-size-fits-all approach may not demonstrate the same level of commitment and attention to detail. When parents and the wider community know that an organisation has created a policy that is tailored to the specific needs of their children, they are more likely to trust the organisation and feel confident that their children are safe.

  1. Legal compliance

Creating bespoke child safety policies ensures that an organization is compliant with relevant legal requirements. Different states and countries have different laws and regulations regarding child safety, and organisations must comply with these laws. A bespoke policy ensures that an organisation has addressed all relevant legal requirements and is providing the highest level of protection for children.

  1. Ongoing evaluation and improvement

Bespoke child safety policies allow for ongoing evaluation and improvement. As an organisation grows and changes, its child safety policies may need to be updated to reflect these changes. A bespoke policy ensures that the organisation can evaluate and improve its policies as needed, ensuring ongoing protection for children.

In conclusion, creating bespoke child safety policies is essential for organisations that work with children. Bespoke policies are tailored to the specific needs of the organisation, address specific risks and challenges, build trust and confidence, ensure legal compliance and allow for ongoing evaluation and improvement. By creating bespoke policies, organisations can demonstrate their commitment to protecting children and providing a safe and supportive environment for all.
